How J. M. Sells Law Uses MoonClerk to Improve Its Automatic Lead Follow-Up System

Joshua Sells, debt tax attorney and founder of J. M. Sells Law, talks with us about his tech-forward firm uses MoonClerk to create custom payment URLS with dynamic URL insertion to improve his automatic lead follow-up.

Can you tell us a little about what your law firm?

M. Sells Law is a national tax debt law firm based out of the Cleveland, Ohio area. We focus exclusively on helping individuals and small businesses resolve their tax obligations with the Internal Revenue Service. In a nutshell, we fix tax problems.

What are your day-to-day responsibilities?

I am the founder and senior tax debt attorney. I provide oversight of the various divisions of the firm, including marketing, client-work, and sales.

How did you get started?

M. Sells Law started in 2019 with a commitment to offering transparent, affordable, and efficient guidance to clients facing a number of IRS obligations. There were plenty of “tax law firms,” but they almost exclusively dealt with estate planning or tax planning. Few offered tax controversy and tax resolution services. We filled that gap.

What have been some key factors in growing your business?

We pride ourselves in making the process easy and streamlined for our clients. To that end, the “payment and quoting” process is typically complicated in the legal field. We fixed this. Being able to use MoonClerk to create custom payment URLS (with dynamic URL insertion, for example), we can use web-based forms to create custom MoonClerk payment URLs that are emailed with our quotes – this provides the customer a “checkout” style experience.

What do you use MoonClerk for?

We use MoonClerk to manage our payment links (customized based on a web-based form we use and dynamic URL insertion). Additionally, we use MoonClerk to process our recurring payments. Most of our legal clients are on on-going payment plans, so having a client-facing portal for self-service (like updating expired cards), has saved us a lot of time.

What problems did you have with your previous payment system?

The fees. We are rather good at “tech” here, so there was no value-add to pay someone to manage our payments (i.e. send out payment reminders, update payment methods, etc.). So, having the ability in MoonClerk to do all of this made a lot of sense for us. And the cost is very simple with MoonClerk and makes a lot of sense for us. Additionally, with our previous payment system, there was a lack of customization that we could do to provide the perfect solution to fit our needs. That system was certainly more costly and we always felt like we were letting the solution drive our strategy. 

What made you finally decide to use MoonClerk?

We finally decided to switch to MoonClerk when we realized the technology would accommodate our strategy. It was fully customizable and allowed us to deliver the kind of payment solution that fit with our business model.

What was your experience when getting started with MoonClerk?

It was simple. Again, we are very “techy” here at J. M. Sells Law, so creating integrations with MoonClerk and customizing URL payment links was relatively easy for us.

What specific feature do you like most about MoonClerk?

The ability to create customized payment links is the biggest feature we like. Second, is the ability for the customer to handle common issues through via self-service - like updating expired credit cards. MoonClerk also has reasonable fees and great customer service. 

How has MoonClerk improved your business?

MoonClerk has absolutely helped our business. We have seen an increase in our “checkouts.” Since we can create custom payment links, our automated lead follow-up system can text and email those payment links so the clear Call To Action in those communications is “click here to pay now and start.” I love being able to present clear “next-steps” and the “payment link” is where that happens. We have seen a higher number of follow-up leads “check out” with this option.

Absolutely. MoonClerk is easy to use and allows the business to define the strategy and the technology can accommodate it.
